Harness the Power of Many at the SHARE Investor Summit 2020

Join pension funds, Indigenous trusts, foundations, endowments and other responsible investors to forge alliances, address global challenges, design solutions and build a sustainable, inclusive and productive economy at the SHARE Investor Summit 2020.

VANCOUVER, BC | FEBRUARY 19 – 21, 2020

Addressing the world’s toughest problems requires more than the brilliance and benevolence of a few; it requires the leadership and collaboration of many. The SHARE Investor Summit 2020 is a one-of-a-kind gathering that will give you the chance to join investment decision-makers and leaders from pension funds, foundations, Indigenous communities, trade unions, faith-based groups, universities, civil society, and investment management firms to find common ground and ways of working together to build a sustainable, inclusive and productive economy.

Under the banner of The Power of Many, the Summit offers a timely, thoughtful and action-oriented agenda over three days where leaders will gather to identify allies, design solutions and amplify investor voices to address key issues including: the climate crisis and just transition, inequality, the future of work and reconciliation. The first day of the Summit will offer educational sessions for pension trustees, foundations and Indigenous trusts.

Our Vision of a Sustainable, Inclusive and Productive Economy

A sustainable, inclusive and productive economy is one where there are opportunities for people of all backgrounds and experiences to live with dignity, support themselves and their families, and contribute their talents. It is an economy that supports and regenerates the health of the systems upon which it depends, especially the earth’s ecosystems. It is an economy where prosperity is broadly shared, especially for historically marginalized groups. It is an economy that builds on the strength, resilience and worldviews of Indigenous peoples. It is an economy that puts capital to work delivering better outcomes for societies rather than societies working to reward financial capital. Building this kind of economy requires us to deploy all available tools and to shift power.

Investor action on its own will fall far short from achieving the change we need, but not mobilizing the trillions of dollars held by asset owners in Canada and globally will most certainly guarantee our failure.

The summit will explore different strategies for investor action including asset manager accountability, impact investing, investor collaboration, shareholder engagement, proxy voting and litigation, to name a few. In addition to looking across different responsible and impact investing strategies, the summit will delve deeper into four cross-cutting themes.

  1. Global Challenges, Investor Responses

Our communities, our societies and our economies are facing unprecedented challenges. The global climate crisis, growing inequality and disruptive business models will impact our investment portfolios and the lives of the beneficiaries and stakeholders our investment funds, endowments and trusts are built to serve. The Summit will provide participants with opportunities to better understand these challenges, hear case studies on how others are addressing them and think about practical ways to build solutions.

  1. Corporate Governance: Emerging Themes, New Business Models

Building a sustainable, inclusive and productive economy requires a hard look at the structures, norms and incentives at the center of how businesses are organized and governed. This theme will explore the latest thinking in corporate governance related to compensation, taxation, diversity, and stakeholder governance as well as the opportunities that exist in the development and growth of new business models.

  1. Leveraging Power in the Investment Chain

Although asset owners such as pension funds, foundations, universities and Indigenous trusts sit at the top of the investment chain, their trustee boards and investment committees often struggle with establishing adequate oversight and evaluation of asset managers, particularly on their responsible investment efforts. This stream will look at efforts to build governance models that align asset manager practices with asset owner interests in Canada and globally, including efforts to promote higher standards of transparency and accountability.

  1. Defining an Investor Agenda on Reconciliation

Investors have an important role to play in supporting the rights of Indigenous peoples and contributing to economic reconciliation through their investment policies and practices. This thematic area will explore opportunities for Indigenous and non-Indigenous investors to collaborate in ways that will contribute to economic reconciliation and the creation of a robust and resilient Indigenous economy in Canada.

We hope you can join us for this important gathering in Vancouver from February 19th to 21st, 2020. Registration will be open soon. In the meantime, please make sure to receive SHARE’s e-news for up-to-date conference information.
