The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is calling on readers of sustainability reports worldwide to nominate their favourite reports from a shortlist of 105 organizations from 13 different countries that were selected in the first round of nominations of its Readers’ Choice Awards.
The GRI’s Readers’ Choice Awards were launched in 2008 to give sustainability report readers everywhere the opportunity to voice their opinion on the thousands of reports produced by organizations each year. The Awards competition is targeted at organizations that publish sustainability reports, whether those reports are based on the GRI Guidelines or on other frameworks.
During the first phase of the competition, over 3,500 people from 88 countries filled out the Readers’ Awards Choice online survey, which was available until the end of 2009. Readers are now being invited to vote on the shortlisted organizations from 13 different countries to determine which organizations deserve recognition for their sustainability reporting. The six winners will be announced during the Amsterdam Global Conference on Sustainability and Transparency, which will be held on May 26 to 28, 2010 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Fifty-one Canadian organizations that produced sustainability reports in 2008 or 2009 participated in the first round of nominations. To find out which reports made it to the shortlist and nominate your favourite reports for the Awards, go to http://awards.globalreporting
By deciding which sustainability reports deserve recognition, report readers are able to influence the future of sustainability reporting and improve the way organizations disclose their economic, environmental and social performance.
Any organization that published a sustainability report in 2008 or 2009 was eligible to participate in the 2010 Awards. Participation is free for both readers and reporting organizations.
The 2010 Awards results will measure whether sustainability reports are meeting the needs of their intended audiences. They will also incorporate a section on what report producers think their objectives are in reporting, and consider whether reports really influence readers’ views and behaviour.
