TORONTO. June 18, 2026 — A shareholder proposal calling on Shopify Inc. (TSX: SHOP) to adopt a formal policy governing its use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) garnered notable support at the company’s annual general meeting (AGM) this week.
The proposal received an estimated 26.70 per cent of support from independent shareholders (13.86% support overall), reflecting meaningful backing for stronger governance and risk management of AI across Shopify’s business and operations.
The proposal was filed by SHARE, the Shareholder Association for Research and Education, on behalf of The Pension Plan of The United Church of Canada, in response to Shopify’s expanding use of generative AI and agentic commerce tools across its platform.
“This level of shareholder support sends a clear message that Shopify should consider stronger guardrails and greater transparency around how these technologies are governed,” said Juana Lee, Associate Director, Corporate Engagement at SHARE. “Adopting a clear, enterprise-wide responsible AI policy is an established, effective way to manage emerging risks and protect long-term shareholder value.”
In supplementary materials shared ahead of the AGM, SHARE outlined the need for a formal policy to strengthen accountability and mitigate AI-related risks. Without effective governance, the continued rollout of generative and agentic AI tools can expose companies and their investors to risks related to human rights, misinformation, fraud and privacy.
SHARE maintains that Shopify’s current disclosures and practices do not provide sufficient clarity on how AI-related risks are identified and managed, nor how its approach aligns with internationally recognized responsible AI standards.
SHARE will continue engaging with Shopify to advance the adoption of a responsible AI policy.
