For international and domestic investors, corporate leaders and policymakers, climate is now the key to competitiveness.
Climate resilience protects long-term value.
Global pension funds and other large institutional investors are exposed to the systemic risks of unmitigated climate change—from physical damage to market volatility and disrupted operations – and they are investing with those risks in mind. Project economics and climate resilience are both on the table when decisions get made.
Clean infrastructure facilitates growth.
More than any other factor, renewable energy, widespread electrification and a reliable, modern grid are essential to unlocking investment in the projects and industries of the future.
Our report, Power at Risk: The Investment Case for a Clean, Competitive Canada, showed that clean electricity constraints, slow infrastructure buildout and policy uncertainty are putting as much as $220 billion in potential capital investment and as much as 80,000 direct jobs at risk across Canada’s economy.
Skilled workers deliver results.
Training, mobility and support for workers affected by economic change is critical to building the clean grid, efficient buildings and infrastructure Canada needs. Workforce availability shouldn’t be a bottleneck for projects. Governments need to work with trade unions to get people ready and get them working.
Speed it up, but do it right.
Canada’s critical minerals resources are needed globally, and governments are working to attract more investment in our mining sector by facilitating faster project approvals. But our efforts to speed up approvals can’t sidestep the requirement to achieve and maintain free, prior and informed consent from Indigenous rights holders – that’s a prerequisite for investors to have confidence that projects can truly move forward, and it’s a duty our governments have to uphold.
We have the projects, the technologies, the workforce and the resources to attract investment to Canada. What we need is a climate competitive policy environment to seal the deals.
