Role: Corporate Engagement & Advocacy Specialist
Status: Full-time, permanent, unionized
Reports to: Director of Shareholder Advocacy
Location: Toronto or Vancouver (remote to start, due to Covid-19)
Reporting to the Director of Shareholder Advocacy and working collaboratively across programs, the Corporate Engagement & Advocacy Specialist plays a key role in SHARE’s shareholder engagement program. They develop and execute corporate engagement strategies, negotiate with companies, and lead collaborative engagement across a range of program areas.

The Engagement & Advocacy Specialist responsibilities include:
- Lead negotiation of formal and informal agreements with target companies;
Lead collaborative work with allied investors, including developing common agendas and shared priorities;
- Contribute to developing strategy and identifying targets, outcomes, timing, focus and activities for each sector and company based on thematic priorities;
- Maintain ongoing, constructive engagement relationships with company personnel, government and regulatory officials;
- Maintain relationships with and monitor developments from engagement partners, allied investors, relevant stakeholder groups, and experts in relevant fields;
- Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of emerging issues and trends in SHARE’s thematic areas
Work collaboratively with the research team to shape research program to support new and emerging engagement objectives;
Monitor corporate compliance with established standards and agreements and follow up as appropriate;
- Maintain complete, accurate and up-to-date records of engagement work, using established processes;
- Contribute to the development of strategy and systems to support a dynamic and growing program;
- Contribute to development of shared knowledge across the SHARE team;
- Represent SHARE in front of internal and external audiences, including webinars and conferences;
- Other duties as assigned.
- Demonstrated proficiency with negotiation and advocacy techniques;
- Excellent analytical skills, political acuity and sound judgement;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to provide compelling and engaging presentations to a range of audiences;
- Excellent record-keeping, organizational and time management skills, including the ability to set priorities and balance competing deadlines and pressures;
- Ability to work independently on a variety of tasks and contribute as part of a team;
- Highly proficient with cloud-based collaboration tools, CRM databases, Microsoft Suite, and relevant database and data analysis tools;
- Ability to conduct research on topics related to the social, environmental and governance policies and practices of publicly traded corporations, including extensive use of online resources.
- Minimum three to five years of experience in an advocacy or negotiation role.
- Master’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent related experience;
- Knowledge of business, investment, and financial markets in Canada and internationally;
- Strong understanding of appropriate thematic priorities, including internationally recognized standards related to climate change and at least one of decent work, human rights due diligence; equity and inclusion; Indigenous rights & reconciliation in the Canadian context; corporate governance; environmental sustainability.
- Fluency in English is required. Fluency in French is a strong asset.
